The Time 100 list has been revealed, with Alejandro González Iñárritu and Gael García Bernal among its ranks.

Each year, Time magazine publishes a list of the 100 most influential people that, because of their work and lifestyle have generated a greater impact in the world.

The Time 100 list

Time divides its most influential people list into five categories: pioneers, titans, artists, leaders, and icons.

And Latin America woke up filled with joy when they saw, not one, but two Mexicans among that coveted Time 100 list: acclaimed film director, Alejandro González Iñárritu, in the icons category, and award-winning actor Gael García Bernal in the artists category.

Alejandro González Iñárritu

Without a doubt, both names have a well-deserved spot on the Time 100 list. First, González Iñárritu has revolutionized the movie industry with his two masterpieces: “Birdman” and “The Revenant”, which made him the recipient of the Academy Award in 2015 and 2016. Plus, he has also won at the Golden Globes, Baftas, Cannes Film Festival and Ariel Awards for his films.

His depiction on Time magazine was in charge of his friend Guillermo del Toro, who referred to González Iñárritu as the real revenant with these words: “I have seen him down and bleeding, and I have seen him strong and in control, but there is always a core within him that doesn’t surrender to adversity or despair.”

Del Toro also highlighted more personal facts about his friend Alejandro, making a point of saying that his presence in that list is because of his human integrity as well as his astonishing cinematographic skill.

Gael García Bernal

On his part, Alfonso Cuarón who is known for directing the award-winning film “Gravity”, was the chosen one to write about Gael García Bernal, who has carved a spot for himself in Hollywood thanks to his starring roles in films like “The Motorcycle Diaries” and “Desierto”, and series like “Mozart in the Jungle” for which he won a Golden Globe earlier this year.

In the piece Cuarón wrote about García for the Time 100 list he recounted an anecdote from the actor’s real life, showing how serious he takes his responsibilities. He spoke about how committed García Bernal is, taking his characters and planting them deep into himself in a way that only a scalpel can take them out again. All this, as a way of saying that superficial things simply don’t exist for Gael.

Two Mexicans in the Time 100 list that surely will give a lot more to talk about in the coming years… All positive things related to their work and talent.
